Our Maiden Voyage

Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas

Read time: about 2 minutes. Published 2026-04-01

For years, we toyed with the idea of going on a cruise, but we (mostly Adam) weren’t sure we’d actually enjoy it. The "what-ifs" were a long list: getting sick on a crowded ship, losing power in the middle of the ocean, or discovering a hidden talent for seasickness.

Victoria never gave up on the dream, and in April 2022 – during the post-COVID resurgence – we finally pulled the trigger. To Adam’s surprise (and delight), he was wrong! We didn’t just like it; we loved it. Now, we’re planning our Annual Cruises and inviting everyone to join the fun.

The Galveston Kickoff

Our journey began in Galveston, Texas, where we met up with close friends the night before departure. Our group was a mix of three couples and two kids (ages 3 and 5). Since none of us had ever cruised before, the excitement at dinner was electric. We were all ready to find our sea legs!

Lessons from Embarkation Day

Stepping onto the ship for the first time was overwhelming. Between the lingering COVID precautions and a blistering Texas April heatwave, we arrived on board hot, exhausted, and – regrettably – dragging way too much carry-on luggage.

Tip 1: Check your bags. Carry on the essentials (meds, a change of clothes, documents) and leave the rest to the porters. A single backpack is plenty!

We headed straight to the Windjammer (Royal Caribbean’s iconic buffet) to regroup. However, with eight people and a mountain of luggage, we were essentially a human roadblock. We learned quickly that trying to "stick together" immediately upon boarding isn't always the best move.

Tip 2: Divide and conquer. On embarkation day, plan to do your own thing. Meet up for dinner once everyone has had a chance to settle into their staterooms and unpack.

Finding Our Rhythm

Once we set sail, the real magic happened. We saw incredible shows, enjoyed world-class dining, and even ice skated on a moving ship! The staff truly made the experience – from the stateroom attendants to our regular waiter who kept the kids laughing every night.

Of course, the ocean has its own plans. We quickly found out who in the group was sensitive to the ship’s motion.

Tip 3: Pack the patches. Dramamine patches are a must-pack for your first cruise. Don't wait until you're green to use them!

The Verdict

We went from skeptics to "hooked" in a matter of days. If you’ve been sitting on the fence like Adam was, consider this your sign to book the trip.

Tip 4: Just go! Sure, things can go wrong on any vacation, but the memories (and the food) are well worth the risk.
